About utahtheaters.info
utahtheaters.info is
dedicated to preserving the memories of theaters in Utah by providing
photos and written histories of all buildings that have been
used as public stage or movie theaters from the early 1900s to
the present day.
Some amusement,
dance,
and
meeting halls have been included because of the possibility
that the were also used for theatrical purposes.
utahtheaters.info began as an extension of villatheatre.com,
which was created by Grant Smith in 2001 as a way to practice skills
learned in a web design course. To help emphasis the importance
of the Villa Theatre, a page was added to villatheatre.com with photos
of other historic Salt Lake theaters. As the web site grew,
it was necessary to split the information on other theaters off into
a separate
site which later became utahtheaters.info.
Funding
For the first few years the web hosting expenses
of utahtheaters.info were a financial burden, but the site is now
close
to being self-sufficient. Advertising on the site pays
for most of the expenses of web hosting, equipment, and travel. All
work is done by unpaid volunteers, which is not likely to change
near future. At the moment, utahtheaters.info does not seem
to generate enough income or have enough volunteers to warrant forming
an official non-profit organization.
Showtime and Theater Links
utahtheaters.info tries to provide links to showtime
information and to official theater web sites, but many theaters
do not list their showtimes on the web or do not have official
web sites of their own. utahtheaters.info is not itself
a provider of showtime information, nor is it the official web
site of any
theater. If you have questions or comments for the management
of a theater, please contact the theater directly.
Contributing
Most of the information on utahtheaters.info comes
from old newspaper articles, which often paint an incomplete
picture of a theater's history. If you have information or
photos that do not appear on this site, please contact
us. If
you would like to express support for your favorite theater or
share memories of past theaters, please visit the guestbook section
for that theater.
