Luxurious ABC Intermountain Theatre Is Welcome Addition to Salt Lake City Exhibition Community

Boxoffice Magazine, 13 November 1972

Salt Lake City's newest and most luxurious theatre, ABC Intermountain Theatres' Regency, is an addition to the local theatre community which is quite unique in location, structural and interior design and technical equipment. The ultra-modern three-story structure, with an exterior of stone, concrete and glass, is elevated above a spacious parking lot with a capacity of 200 cars. The area within the ramp is fountained and landscaped, adding to the overall effect of the design.

The inside of the theatre is no less unique. One side of the second floor lobby extends to a terrace overlooking the Salt Lake Valley, and the interior standee area has floor-to-ceiling windows so that the patrons might enjoy the panoramic view.

Behind the handsome exterior and the plush decor are specially designed acoustics and some of the most advanced electronic sound equipment the industry has yet developed. And the use of the new Century 35/70mm projection system and Christie CHF xenon consoles with 3,000-watt bulbs, coupled with the modern curved 22x50-foot Tecnikote XR 171 screen, produces a picture of considerable sharpness and clarity. The multi-channel sound system is by Electro Sound, and all the systems combined bring the Regency patrons the ultimate in audio and visual effects. Other booth equipment – which was supplied and installed by Peterson Theatre Supply – includes Kollmorgen lenses, Neumade rewinds and Golberg 5,000-foot reels for 35mm.

Personal services include an ample well-lighted parking area around the Regency and sparkling lounge and restroom facilities located lobby left. The ladies' lounge features shag carpet and wall mirrors.

The Regency auditorium features some 800 widely spaced rocking chair and lounge-type seats from American Seating Co. and electronically controlled temperature to allow the patrons to enjoy year round climatized comfort. Red waterfall and traveler curtains and gold sidewall curtains from R. L. Grosh & Sons coordinate with the orange, gold and brown carpeting and the red-orange seats.

A centrally located refreshment center features K-Way drink dispensers and a Scotsman ice machine. The concession counter was prefabricated with built-in popcorn warmers and candy display, Walnut veneer on the front matches the back bar, and tile back wall colors match the carpet colors.

Other features of the Regency include a quarry tile floor at the entrance and around the concession area, a manager's office which connects with the cashier at the box-office, a projection room with dual film dummies for studio previews, and offices for the Salt Lake division of ABC Intermountain Theatres on the second floor.
