Dolby-70mm version of 'Star Wars' open

Deseret News, 19 August 1977, page C13
"Star Wars" is being shown in six-track stereophonic sound by Dolby and in 70 mm at the Centre Theater beginning today, according to announcement from the theater.

This makes the sound crystal clear and takes away all static.  It also make the print flawless, according to moviegoers who have seen the film as a 35 mm print with conventional sound and later in the new stereo-70 technique.

Those who have seen the movie in both styles say the differences are especially noticeable during the battles.  The stereo-70 brings out the space vehicles with "greater clarity" and makes audiences feel they are in the vehicles, according to those who have seen both versions.

Reason the stereo-70 print was not available at first was because few prints of that type were made, according to Mann Theaters management.  This technique of projection was used during some of the performances of "Sound of Music," when it was first presented in Salt Lake.  A new version of Walt Disney's "Fantasia" is shown with stereo-70 and this is expected to open in October at the Regency.  However, the new "Fantasia" is even beyond the new "Star Wars" in that the Disney film has eight tracks and "Star Wars" has only six.

In connection with the new projection technique, the Centre will receive the prints of the film for the next few days from people dressed as Darth Vader and Chewbacca, the villian and the Wookie from the picture.  They started work in these costumes today.
