Reuel and Dolores Kohler remodeled an office building to create the Sandcastle twin theater, which opened in September of 1976. The theater was originally a first-run theater, but became a discount theater in 1980.
The Sandcastle closed on 2 March 1998. Part of the reason for the closure was the lack of family-friendly movies. "We can't get the kind of movies we want to play anymore," Reuel Kohler said. "The movies have really slidden downhill to a new low . . . Just about everything has something in it that's objectionable . . ."
