The New Opera House
Capitol for this Great Project Coming in Fast
Ogden Standard Examiner, 12 January 1889, page 3
H. C. Wardleigh, Esq., went to Salt Lake last evening to install the officers of the four lodges of the I. O. O. F. of that place. But he had also another object in view. The corner of Fourth and Main, due south of his music store has been sold to the First National Bank for $25,000. This bank desires a piece of land 50 by 100 feet. The local directors have stated that they are satisfied with such a piece of property, and Mr. Wardleigh's mission to the Capital now, is to see the other parties interested in this sale. If no greater depth is desired than stated above, the sale will only facilitate the erection of the new opera house. If the Freemen building can be purchased, and it is understood to be fore sale, the proposed Opera House building will gain some twenty feet in depth, which is very desirable. this will give the business places of the building fronting Main a depth of 100 feet, while with the right of way over the water sect east of the building ample room for alley and dressing room annex will be secured. Thus if Mr. Wardleigh's mission is successful, the recent sale has only helped matters along, and a new opera house becomes and assured fact.
About $80,000 of stock has been subscribed by local capital, and Senator Tabor, of Denver, has signified his desire of taking the rest. This being the case, Ogden will not long be given the black eye by the troupes that pass through without a call.
