Funeral held for Vernal Theatre owner

Funeral Services were held Saturday for Deward (Duke) Harold Shiner, 64, who died of injuries following an automobile accident.

The services held in the Vernal Second Ward Chapel were officiated by Bishop Nyle Bigelow, who also read the obituary.  Family prayer was offered by Al Tassainer.

Eva Hatch played prelude and postlude music.  Kathy Evans accompanied herself on the guitar and sang, “Down In the Little Green Valley,” Thomas J. Williams, Jr. Pronounced invocation.

“Whispering Hope”, sung by Mr. And Mrs. Paul Jensen, accompanied by Mrs. Hatch, was the second number, which was followed by speaker, President Glade Sowards.  The closing song, “In the Garden” was sung by Walt Burfitt and Dennis Hatch, accompanied by Pat Jensen.

Benediction was given by John Alplanalp.  Dedication of the grave was by Earl Gurr. Dennis Shinner, Deloy Shiner, Vard Shiner, Danny Jackson, Jimmy Murray and Larry Gurr acted as pallbearers.  Uintah Stake High Priests were honorary pallbearers.

The Vernal Second Ward Relief Society was in charge of the flowers and served the family lunch.

Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Parks, under the direction of the Vernal Mortuary.

Mr. Shiner was born October 18, 1909 in Vernal to Chauncey Huse and Annice Ellen Peters Shiner.   He married Ella Gurr June 20, 1940 in Duchesne, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple November 9, 1942.  He was owner and manager of the Sunset Drive-In Theatre and Vernal Theatre, former sheep rancher, member of the LDS Church, high priest, Vernal Second Ward; welfare clerk, member of the Vernal Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include widow; sons, daughter, Bryce C., Phoenix, Arizona; Brent D., Salt Lake City; Mrs. Robert (Sandra) Reigan, Vernal; five grandchildren; brothers, Grail, Vernal; Alson, Salt Lake City.

Out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Bryce C. Shiner, Phoenix; Mr. and Mrs. Brent D. Shiner, Mr. and Mrs. Alson A. Shiner, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Shiner, Mrs. Roger Underwood, all of Salt Lake City.
