'Redesign,' Theater Ordered

WEST JORDAN - Owners of a theater closed New Year's Day by West Jordan authorities were told to redesign the facility and meet with the city council before reopening, officials said Friday.
Closure of the theater during a performance of "Babes in Toyland" created a controversy among parents of the children participating in the play. The parents said the children spent hundreds of hours rehearsing and purchased costumes and scripts for the play, only to have the show closed at the last minute.
The theater, the Green-brier, 8251 S. Redwood Rd., was constructed by John and LaRue Green, city records show.
Closure was based upon failure to obtain a business license, although the Salt Lake County Fire Department and building and zoning officials listed 32 reasons why the building should be closed, Glendon Leak, city manager, said Friday.
City records show a permit was issued on Dec. 20 to allow hookup of electricity for the construction phase.
The building and zoning enforcement report stated, "It would be our opinion that before occupancy should be granted for the building that a complete set of plans sealed by a Utah State licensed architect (should be submitted) . . . before doing any more work."
This report was dated Dec. 31 and lists 21 corrections needed.
The fire department inspection, dated Dec. 30, listed 11 requirements to be met before clearance.
