Gem Theater Faces New Closure Move

Salt Lake County again is threatening to close the Gem Theater at 8945 W. 27th South in Magna - this time for violating fire and building codes rather than showing X-rated movies.
Commissioners have scheduled a public hearing for Oct. 25 at 9 a.m.
A packet of inspection reports presented to commissioners Monday contends several fire doors don't open and aren't marked by lights. It also charges that plumbing doesn't meet state codes.
A petition asking the county to close the Gem was filed with commissioners last week. It charged the theater shows X-rated films.
"We strongly oppose expanding X-rated movies in our area by allowing such films to be shown in Magna. This is where filthy movies got started in Utah and we do not want it repeated," the petition declared.
