The Cinemark 16 opened on 12 November 1999 and was the second theater complex built by Cinemark USA in Utah County. The theater is part of the Provo Towne Center Mall and features stadium seating and digital sound in all auditoriums.
"We would like to bring a family experience to Provo, making [the Cinemark at Provo Towne Center] the ideal place for families to spend time together" said Randall Hester, vice-president of Cinemark USA. "With so many movie choices, there is something for every member of the family."

The Gem Theater was built about 1905 by Wilkinson and Corry. The theater showed silent films with background music provided by an orchestra or pianist.1 The Gem Theater was open through at least 1914.2
