Ogden Standard Examiner, 12 December 2005
Article Summary:
At the groundbreaking ceremony for the $18.5 million high-adventure recreation center, Utah Jazz owner Larry H. Miller unveiled plans and drawings for a 12-screen theater complex to be built to the south.
The theater will cost between $11 and $15 million and should be completed by 1 November 2005. It will have a total of 2,460 seats, with auditoriums ranging in size from 120 to 590 seats. The 110,000-square-foot complex will include several food operators and three large meeting rooms. All theaters will feature stadium seating, wall-to-wall screens, and state-of-the-art sound systems. The architect is Mustafa Kanishka of Salt Lake City-based SSKR Architects.
The theater complex is the fifth major project announced for the former Ogden City Mall site. The Treehouse Children's Museum, at the north end of the site, is under construction and is expected to open next year.
The LDS Church plans to begin construction in 2006 on a four-story office building east of the museum. Salt Lake City developer Dave Earnshaw plans a six-story condominium complex that will share the north wall of the rec center.
The City Council is expected to consider an agreement with the Boyer Company to develop the remaining 6.8 acres of the 21-acre site.
The 122,000-square-foot recreation center will feature an 80-foot climbing wall, a Skyventure wind tunnel for skydiving, a Flowrider pool for surfing and wakeboarding, 36 lanes of enhanced bowling, an arcade, two restaurants, fitness equipment, and one of the largest indoor tracks in Utah.
