Sunday Closing Law
Manager Grant of the Grand Opera House to Test Validity of Same
Ogden Standard Examiner, 21 November 1904, page 7
Notified to Appear at Police Court This Morning – Pastime and Lyceum Obey orders of Police Department
R. Alexander Grant, manager of the Grand Opera House, as was anticipated, was arrested last night for violating the ordinance requiring the closing of theatrical entertainments Sundays. No attempt was made to interfere with the performance and Chief Browning and Captain Brown did their part in a very quiet manner. Manager Grant, who had been notified if he opened the opera house Sunday he would be placed under arrest, met Chief Browning and Captain Brown inside the entrance and was notified to appear before the municipal court at 10 o’clock this morning which he promised to do. There is a state law and an ordinance in the statues prohibiting Sunday shows, and it is understood that the management of the Grand Opera House took the first step in a pre-arranged program last night, which aims at making a test of these laws. Utahna theatre and the Lyceum in obedience to a notification from the chief of police last week did not open their houses last night. There has been strong reaction in certain circles against Sunday shows, of late, the demand for the enforcement of the law coming principally from the churches.
Manager Grant appeared in the municipal court this morning and the hearing of the case was set for December 1st. He was represented by Henderson & MacMillan.
