Salt Lake Film Society Comes to St. George

Cedar City Review, 14 February 2008

Article Summary:

The Salt Lake Film Society brought independent and smaller films to St. George on 8 February 2008 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their newest venue, the Red Cliffs Cinema building behind the Red Cliffs Mall.

Part of the mission statement for the Salt Lake Film Society says, “We promote diversity of film exhibition and creation. We educate, advocate and inform about and through cinema. We foster film talent and cultivate film appreciation and participation. Our programs and venues ensure that the potent ideas and voices of film are accessible to our community.”

The Salt Lake Film Society decided the time was right to have a presence in Southern Utah. Paul Liacopoulos, a founding SLFS board member, said, “The demographics of Southern Utah coincides with the renaissance of film with the popularity of Sundance and indie films. We decided to take a leap of faith in St. George. We believe in this. It just makes sense to expand . . . Film has an educational value to explore so many issues. Film is one of the last true accessible forms of art for regular people like you and me. That is why we love film. That is why we expanded to include Southern Utah.””

The concessions at the Red Cliffs Cinema will offer international chocolates and interesting candies. Xetava Gardens from Kayenta will run a coffee bar that will serve high quality coffee drinks, including gourmet drip coffee, smoothies, specialty teas, and hot chocolate.
