Fire Destroys Daniel Theatre
Vernal Express, 1 May 1908
Salt Lake, Oct. 28, - The Daniel Theatre, at 235 South State street, was gutted by fire, which originated in the basement at 1 o'clock this morning, occasioning a loss of $45,000.
The fire started in the basement in some way not yet explained, and much damage was done by some and water to the stock of the Daniels department store on the floors above, together with a large part of the stock which was burned, which loss, added to that of the theatre equipment, and to the building, bring the loss up to the estimated figure given above.
The damage done to the theatre property was the heaviest, as it is estimated at $35,000.
The Bungalow hotel, located on the upper floors of the Daniels building, was also a heavy loser through damage by smoke and water, and it was necessary to effect the rescue of some of the guests by means of ladders.
Owing to the fact that the building is closely flanked by other buildings, the work of the fire department was greatly hampered, and it was difficult to locate the seat of the fire, as heavy volumes of smoke and cramped passage ways made it impossible to penetrate the basement excepting by round about ways, but at 2:30 the fire was reached and the flames quickly extinguished.
