600-seat theater proposed in Alpine

 On 2 February 2010, the nonprofit Alpine Arts Council announced plans to build a 600-seat theater at 264 South Main Street, on land bordering Dry Creek. The 54-foot-high theater would require special permission from the city to exceed the maximum building height of 34 feet.

A city ordinance written in 2009 requires the theater to have 201 parking stalls, but another city committee has asked the arts council to redesign with 160 stalls to provide more open green space. The arts council has secured agreements with nearby businesses allowing parking in their parking lots.

The theater will be similar to the Hale Center in Salt Lake and the Covey Center in Provo. A "trap" will allow actors to disappear through the stage floor and a "fly-way" allowing actors and stage scenery to rise above the stage. The facility will include classrooms, an art gallery that will be used for receptions, a sculpture garden, and a second smaller theater in the basement. An outdoor amphitheater and costume rental shop could be built later.
