'Fantasia' returning in 70mm, full stereo
Deseret News, 26 August 1977, page 20A
"Fantasia," the Walt Disney classic, will be shown in Salt Lake this fall for the first time in 8-track stereo and 70mm. It has been scheduled for the Regency.
This will mean that Salt Lakers will see the movie in a projection style planned for it originally. When Disney first released it in 1940, few theaters were equipped with 8-track stereo and 70 mm, so the film wizard had to give permission for it to be shown in 35 mm and without the full sound.
The film was a flop with the public at first. It received critical acclaim as "being ahead of its time." Disney always acknowledged that it was a financial flop. However, about seven years ago, the colors caught the attention of hippies and the movie started to make money. It is now in the black.
However, it has been held back from television because of that medium's inability to meet the technical requirements, according to the studio. The current release, in theaters equipped with 8-track stereo and 70 mm is expected to assure another new lease for the 37-year-old movie.
The film features classical musical numbers with artistic interpretation by Disney animators.
