Plitt to open $2 million theater complex in S.L.

Plitt Theatres, Inc. disclosed that it will open a new multi-screen theater complex in Salt Lake City in December. Edward M. Plitt, vice president of the national chain, announced in Los Angeles that the new theater, dubbed the Plitt Mid-Valley Cinemas, will be constructed in the Family Center shopping complex at 5400 S. Redwood Rd. The complex, estimated to cost some $2 million, will contain six theaters with a total seating capacity estimated at 2018. The six theaters will have estimated capacity of 486 seats, 386 seats, 354 seats, 338 seats, 273 seats and 231 seats. All six houses will be equipped with silver screens which permit 3-D projection, and will be fitted for 35 mm film projection and Dolby Stereo. Hermes Associates, which operated the Family Center, expects to break ground on the project next week for an anticipated opening Dec. 7. The new cinemas will put the total number of Plitt screens in Utah at 21. Currently the chain operates eight screens in the Salt Lake area. The Plitt chain includes more than 500 screens in 24 states coast to coast.
