The Regal Crossroads 14 & RPX is the first Regal Cinemas in the state of Utah. The 60,860 square foot entertainment complex features 14 state-of-the-art luxury auditoriums, with contemporary concession stands and a seating capacity of 1,400. [1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7]
The largest auditorium features Regal Premium Experience (RPX), which “presents movies the way filmmakers intended with powerful, uncompressed surround sound and bright eye-popping images in 2D and RealD 3D. Guests will enjoy the custom-built premium environment featuring luxurious King-Size Recliners. A giant immersive screen is illuminated by high-quality digital projectors and completed with a state-of-the-art sound system.” [7]
Regal Cinemas is part of Crossroads at Taylorsville, a $22 million redevelopment of the area formerly known as The Family Center. For 20 years the intersection of 5400 South and Redwood Road was the retail hub for most of west Salt Lake County, then newer retail centers in developing cities took businesses away from the Family Center, leaving it with 60% vacancy and aging buildings. The city of Taylorsville actively participated in the Crossroads project, helping the previous owner find a buyer who would redevelop the property, but without investing any public dollars or offering incentives. Crossroads at Taylorsville covers 20 acres and offers a variety of retail stores and several new restaurants, including Cafe Rio, Zao Asian Cuisine, Farrell’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor. Bill Stone, CEO of S-Squared Development, which headed the Crossroads project, said. “With Regal Cinemas’ 14-screen, luxury multiplex here, we are confident that moviegoers from the greater Salt Lake Valley will choose The Crossroads to experience first run films with state-of-the-art amenities.” [5]
Regal Entertainment Group partnered with The Adoption Exchange, the Taylorsville Food Pantry, and Primary Children's Medical Center for a three-day preview event held March 12 - 14. $3 movies, popcorn, and soft drinks all benefited local charities. Recently-released films were organized into themed days, “2016 Blockbusters”, “Superheroes for a Cause”, and “Paperback Pictures”. [7]
The official grand opening was Thursday, March 16, featuring the live-action retelling of the Disney animated classic, Beauty and the Beast. [7]
The Regal Crossroads 14 & RPX replaces two cinemas by location and one by name. Midvalley Cinemas opened in 1983 at the south end of The Family Center and expanded from six to twelve screens before being demolished in 2002. The Showstar Cinemas 6, across from The Family Center on the north side of 5400 South, closed in 2016 after plans were announced for the new Regal Cinemas. The Crossroads Cinemas triplex was located in the basement of Crossroads Mall, which was demolished in 2007 to be replaced by City Creek.
Regal Crossroads 14 & RPX was the first theater complex in Utah that was built specifically for luxury recliners.
