Sandy Starships

Sandy, Utah

(1980 - 2000)

The Sandy Starships, which opened 1 December 1980, was a four-screen theater in a strip-mall in Sandy, Utah.  The theater had a futuristic design, as if it were a spaceship, and even had a robot mascot.  One screen was equipped for Dolby Stereo and in the 1990s another was equipped for DTS.  The Starship Theaters chain also had a 2-screen theater known as the Olympus Starships.

The Sandy Starships was originally a second-run theater.  In the late 1980s or early 1990s, Cinemark built a 7-screen theater next door to the Sandy Starships and later expanded it to 9 screens.  After the Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons opened nearby, the Cinemark Movies 9 became a dollar theater and the Sandy Starships switched from second-run to dollar status.  The theater closed after its 20-year lease expired on 30 November 2000.

A note, taped to the inside of the entrance doors, said "Thank you for 20 years of patronage!  On December 1st, 1980, we opened our doors for business.  Our lease expired on November 30th, 2000.  We will be closed December 1st 2000.  We have enjoyed serving the Sandy community over the last 20 years.  A big thank youi for your patronage from the owners and employees of Starship Theatres Inc."
