Laurel-Loaded 'Lawrence' Opens Run

Given a rousing sendoff with appropirate ceremony and premiere festivities, "Lawrence of Arabia" took off on an extended run at the South East Theatre Thursday night.

Befitting the film, already loaded with laurels and considered a shoo-in for the Oscar, the premiere-sponsoring Sugar House Chamber of Commerce staged a glittering pre-show program.

Band in Spotlight

The Highland High School concert at the theater entrance.  And Sondra Martin, Miss Sugar House of 1963, performed the honors in a ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the show.

The board of directors of the Sugar House C. of C. acted as reception committee for the event.

"Lawrence of Arabia," starting its roadshow engagement at the South East, already has picked up awards from several organizations.

It has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards in this year's competition, including categories for best picture and best actor (Peter O'Toole, who plays the title role.)

Guinness on Hand

In addition to O'Toole, the picture stars Alec Guinness as Prince Feisal, leader of the Arab revolt; Anthony Quinn, as sheik of the Howeitat tribe; Jack Hawkins as British commander-in-chief in the Middle East; Jose Ferrer as Turkish governor of Deraa; Claude Rains as head of the Arab Bureau, British Intelligence; Omar Sharif as Lawrence's Arab companion, and Arthur Kennedy as American war correspondent.
