Megaplex at Valley Fair Mall
West Valley City, Utah

Megaplex Theatres will open a new 15-screen theater at Valley Fair Mall by November 2012.  Construction will begin after the holidays with the demolition of the vacant Mervyn's department store building.  The 112,000-square-foot theater complex will feature 2,700 seats with reserved stadium seating, digital projection, D-BOX motions seats, an IMAX theater, a full-service food court, and a “Director’s Suite” reception hall.   The theater is part of a $40-million remodeling project that will expand Valley Fair Mall to 120 tenants and more than a million square feet.

Reuel and Dolores Kohler remodeled an office building to create the Sandcastle twin theater, which opened in September of 1976. The theater was originally a first-run theater, but became a discount theater in 1980.

The Sandcastle closed on 2 March 1998. Part of the reason for the closure was the lack of family-friendly movies. "We can't get the kind of movies we want to play anymore," Reuel Kohler said.* "The movies have really slidden downhill to a new low . . . Just about everything has something in it that's objectionable . . ."
