The Academy Square Cinema opened in October 1982 and showed classic or second-run movies through April 1984. Academy Square was the original campus of Brigham Young University, sold in 1975 with developers hoping to transform it into a shopping center similar to Trolley Square. After several failed attempts at redevelopment, Provo City acquired the property, demolished three of its deteriorating buildings, and rebuilt the main building as the new Provo City Library.
