Lack of family flicks spurs theater to close for week
Deseret News, 13 December 1997, page B1
Article Summary:
In December 1997 the Alhambra Theater closed temporarily because of a lack of family-quality movies. Owners Jim and Sharee Young expressed concern about the dwindling selection of wholesome movies, while the number of PG-13 and R-rated movies increased. The Christmas season is already a sluggish period, but it has been made worse by the lack of family films. Attendance at the Alhambra and the Towne Cinemas in American Fork may also be down because of the recent opening of the Water Gardens Cinema 6.
Norm Nielsen, president of SCERA, believes that the decline in attendance is because of the increasing number of movie theater screens in Utah County rather than from an increase in the number of R-rated movies. With the recent opening of the Spanish 8 Theaters, there are 58 screens in the valley.
